THE SHAKESPEARE BUILDING
My childhood home, the Shakespeare Building, is near and dear to my heart. It was designed by Dwight Perkins (of Café
Brauer fame) and John L. Hamilton, former employees of the
renowned architect Louis Sullivan. Built in 1910 with 24 four- and
five-bedroom apartments, this courtyard-style building has been
home to several generations of Chicago families. Amenities include
beautifully landscaped front and rear gardens with barbeque grills
and patio furniture, private storage rooms, professional management, and a live-in engineer. Residents are welcome to participate
in the building’s garden committee.
The Shakespeare Building is conveniently located directly across
the street from the Lincoln Park gardens, the Conservatory, the
Lincoln Park Zoo, the Nature Museum, Chicago’s lakefront, and
public transportation. It is in the Lincoln Elementary School District
and on the same block as Francis W. Parker School.
